Malkolak launched conservational programmes to protect valuable marine animals

By Dr.Y.Bala Murali Krishna

Hyderabad: Malkolak Knowledge Centre (Malkolak) was established with the purpose of building a strong research base into various frontier technology areas so as to develop new methods, tools, processes and technologies by forging relationships with various national institutions, research organisations, and academia for the application of knowledge suited to industry needs and requirements.

It has also plans to establish ‘state of the art’ research facilities in India or abroad either on its own or in strategic partnerships with other collaborating organisation(s), to carry out basic and applied research to develop processes of manufacture and/or synthesis and branded products for domestic and export markets. It is in this regard a Marine biology research centre is being set up in Goa to accomplish graduate, post graduate and Ph. D. programmes in core and emerging disciplines of the Marine Science and Technology and Maritime Studies, under the leadership of world renowned scientist Dr.Anil Chatterji. The main purpose of this institute is to integrate various disciplines related to marine research where young researchers will be produced with vast knowledge of these disciplines. These programmes will be supported by many reputed scientists and academia which is going to be the first attempt of its own kind in India. The institute is developing linkages with national and international organizations where our young and highly trained personnel will get opportunity to join these organizations.

Jamboo, a tiny and backward island village in India’s east coast of Orissa, is poised to join the global effort at conserving the hitherto highly endangered but unique marine creature – the Horseshoe Crab – popularly known as the ‘living fossil’ for its existence since the last 425 million years. It is due to the initiative of the Hyderabad-based Malkolak Knowledge Centre (Malkolak), the project was mooted to save the wonderful animal from extinction, involving the fishermen in situ, the scientists and other stake holders.

This cyclone-battered island village, with no drinking water, communication and electricity facilities of the modern days, is expected to set an example to the world that poverty and illiteracy is no bar to protect the endangered horseshoe crab and promote research and better their own cause, if empowered with the right spirit of motivation and determination.

Scientists world over started evincing keen interest in studying the horseshoe crab in all aspects as it is likely to unlock the secret of its longevity for millions of years without any change in its physical structure, genetic resistance to deadly marine bacterial attacks, and even its capacity to self-regenerate severed organs. The amazing creature had even attracted the attention of the world famous environment film maker Mike Pandey who prepared a documentary film titled “Timeless Traveler - The Horseshoe Crab” to promote awareness on the need for its conservation and intensified research.

“If we could identify the gene/protein responsible for the auto-regeneration of its severed gill flaps (lungs) within 120 days, we could develop a revolutionary application on human beings to benefit millions of people suffering from one or the other organ deficiency,” says eminent Indian scientist Dr. Anil Chatterji who has been with Malaysian University as the principal scientific research officer.

He had also developed a technology which could multiply the population of the horseshoe crab and extract its blue blood without sacrificing the animal in the wild in order to meet the biomedical applications in a big way.

“The research so far has revealed tremendous potential for spectacular scientific breakthroughs that could rewrite the pages of medical history in finding cure for AIDS, Cardio Vascular diseases and Diabetes, leave alone defence and other strategic applications,” researchers claim.

The scientists want to take advantage of the villagers’ traditional godly sentiment attached to the animal for undertaking their conservation in a big way to promote research to benefit humanity.

The scientists, with the help of Malkolak, had designed the horseshoe crab project to bring about awareness among the fishermen of the Jamboo Island to start with and other villages later, on the need for conserving the horseshoe crab using local resources.

It might be recalled that the Malkolak has decided to assist the project as part of its objective to evolve itself into a world class organization with advanced research, training, consultation and information services in frontier science and technology domains.

The Malkolak focusses on emerging technologies and processes in the representative but not exhaustive sectors of drugs and pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, information and communication technologies, microelectronics, nano-technology, environment and ecology, aero-space, earth and ocean sciences etc.
